The news of the devastation in japan hits home for me.
I have visited the country I call my second home about 15 times.
We here in the states, and around the world are praying for your total spiritual, and economic recovery!
I can't wait to return!!!!

In these difficult times my deepest feelings are with all of you and I am praying for the safety of everyone in Japan and for a positive outcome to this situation.

Like everyone in the jazz community, I have watched with concern the recent events in Japan.
I have often felt that you, the Japanese jazz audience, functions as the “backbone” of the jazz world. We are all hurt by what has happened.
I have fond memories of performing in Sendai a few times over the years and that makes everything that has happened even more meaningful and heartbreaking to me.
There are many ways that the Japanese culture has led the world and been inspriring to all of us over the years. Again we are all watching with awe and respect as you show everyone your strength and fortitude in crisis.
I want to encourage you all to do your best in this horrible and challenging time.

Technology has shrunk the world beyond anything I could have imagined growing up in the 1930s; we now live in a global community, and when disaster strikes like this, it is all of our responsibility to respond. My prayers go out to the victims and their families-- and if that's you, please don't give up. If I know Japan, it will come back stronger than ever before."
It is like seeing a good neighbor in distress and not being able to do anything about it. I began performing in Japan in the 1960's and feel very close to my friends there. My wife Jan and I and our associates would like you to know that our hearts and prayers are with you and I look forward to bringing my new electric group to Blue Note Tokyo in August.
We are thinking of you warmly, with all our heart, and we pray everyday for the sanity of your air, water, food and ground.
Please be ensured of all our support. We wish truely that the situation will get back soon to normal and that people will come back to listen to jazz music, which is in its own level healing the wounds of the world. Let's be back to Tokyo and share the best moments together!

My prayers are with all the Japanese people in this time of great sorrow and devastation. Japan has been so near to my heart since my first visits 37 years ago, and I now have my precious family in Fukushima and Tokyo. I pray daily for everyone in this time of deep sadness.
To my dear Japanese fans! My heart goes out to you. I am devastated by this great tragedy that has plagued your people and feel personally invested because Japan has become a home away from home for me. What is overwhelming, however, is the bravery and honour that you exhibit, even now, during this unbelievably trying time. People putting their lives at risk to help total strangers, taking upon themselves the efforts of starting to rebuild cities and communities. I sincerely hope that the worst is over and that the reconstruction process can commence. My thoughts and prayers are with you and I cannot wait to be with you, in person, as soon as possible. 私は、総ての亡くなった皆様への哀悼の念を表明すると同時に、被災した側としなかった側を、まるでアウトとセーフであるかの如く捉える感覚をまったく持っていません。東北地方と言わず東京と言わず沖縄と言わず、今後、残された日本人は一人残らず凄絶なサヴァイヴしてゆかないといけない。それは安っぽい「みんなひとつなんだよ」「助け合いの心を」といった言葉をまったく受け付けないほどに凄絶であると思っています。しかし、凄絶なサヴァイヴというのは、毎日泣いて、辛くて辛くて、死にたくて死にたくて、といった事ではありません。ジャズミュージックの歴史を最初から見直すと、あらゆる音楽ジャンルの中で、唯一ジャズだけが復興に光とユーモアを与える側にいたジャンルである事が解ります。私は一国民として、既にサヴァイブに参入していますが、一ジャズメンとして、誇りを持ってずっと演奏して行きたいと思っています。「頑張りましょう」というのもシンプルなメッセージですが、ギンギンに頑張ってバタリと倒れてしまっては負けです。勝つように頑張るとは、誇りを持ち、そしてユーモアを持ち、セクシーであること、即ち、ジャズであることなのです。東京は直接的な被災が無かったから、東北の方々を「応援」する。というのは、私は失礼だと思う。共に行くのです。また「音楽家としていま、何が出来るのか？」問いは、愚問の極であると思う。音楽家は音楽をするのです。私の演奏や私の作品でなくとも良い。是非なんらかの方法で、ジャズミュージックをお聴きになってみてください。
